This house was deserted and stripped out when I bought it, so it was a complete restoration. I have rewired it several times, (neighbors keep "shopping" here when I am gone) replumbed it including water, drain, waste and vent all the way to the street, Added 4 bathrooms, and a bedroom, replaced the entire cedar post piers and releveled, changed the steel roof out, rebuilt the bay window 3 times, as well as all the window sash, Insulated between the walls and in the attic, wallpapered the hall, drywalled the walls in 2 rooms and the hall, painted many times, refinished the red pine floors which had never been sanded, replaced the entire kitchen and one fachwerk floor using 1 x 6" t&g walls from a building being torn down on the SWTSU campus, rebuilt an enclosed entire side porch, converting it to an entrance hall/laundry and bathroom, dug out the basement 2' deeper and rebuilt the side walls, flooring it with concrete, rebuilt the stacked rock foundation in part of the house, replaced the missing adobe bricks when I rebuilt the outside wall that was falling over. Rebuilt the kitchen from the wall hung sink and one cabinet and a woodstove in the corner to a modern kitchen. |

hen driving by in Sept. '74 I noticed the front door wide open to this deserted house and yelled "Stop the Car!". I went running inside and saw guano 18" deep on both sides of the door where the birds had been roosting, and layers of old linoleum on the floors. When my husband came looking for me, I told him we were going to buy this house. I contacted the owners, who said they needed a development plan for the old town, which had been sold with the surrounding many acres. While researching the development options, I discovered the Nat'l Register of Historic Homes, Main Street project. I quit my job at Exxon so I could leave Houston at 5 a.m. and be at the courthouse by 8 to do the research. I interviewed Henry Gruene Jr. several times, and did hours of research at the Houston Public Library, getting the narrative on the history submitted to the Texas Historical Commission. Truett Lattimer @TTHC asked me if I wanted my name on the survey, but I turned him down, thinking I did not want to get anyone jealous, I just wanted to preserve the town so the developers could not bulldoze it. I then purchased the house in October, and cleaned it with hose and water bucket, broom, and big box of Spic |
