no one died while we lived there but,
my daughter was 5 and was the first to say she felt like someone was
watching her (when she was alone)my son was always afraid and was sure
the house was haunted. My husband and myself felt it as well.I tried to
put my sons fears to rest but the longer we lived there things became
more and more difficult until I just wanted out. |

Owners of Home |
|
The land was originally owned
by one of the founding fathers of Silverton, Aldolphus "Jake" McClaine.
He sold the property to Sara Adeline Lee in 1895.
The construction on the home was finished some time between 1909 to
1910. It was a beautiful Victorian, but in the 1960's it was purchased
by a family by the name of Furgeson. Mr. J.K. Furgeson was a logger and
he owned his own company. Together with his wife Patricia "Patty" they
raised their children in this home.
Some time durring their coarse of ownership they decided to convert
this historical victorian beauty into the more modern arcitectual
structure that we live in today. Looking at it now I believe that
perhaps J.K. and Patty we trying to copy house designer Frank Llyod
Wright. He was comissioned to build a home here in Silverton , the only
one he ever built in Oregon which is now located at the Oregon Gardens.
So J.K. and Patty turned this house completely around adding and taking
away until the stucture was unrecongnisable to the structure Mrs. Lee
had built. The Furgesons used inported mediterainian Red ceramic tile
on the spiral stair case walls. Red carpet streamming down the stairs,
there were christal and brass chandeliers in the formal dinning room
with red velvet draperies...aparently Patty liked red. Even the kitchen
counter tops are done in Red tile. She obviously had rich taste and
J.K. barred nothing to make her happy.
Unfortunatly after J.K. passed away and Patty held on to her life with
out him, she developed demensia and was moved to a nursing home. The
home she loved left abandoned and uncared for. To pay for her care the
family, left with no choice; put the house up for sale. It sat with few
intrested buyers for 2 years. Thats when I saw it for the first time on
a realators website. I fell in love instantly. I told My Husband that I
wanted to go and loook at it. We lived in Salem at the time. He said he
did not want to live in Silverton , he might be the head of the family,
but I'm the neck that turns the head. I got him to take a look and he
too fell in love with it. We had just started taking care of my mom who
had suffered 4 strokes and she actually was the one who bought it so we
could take care of her and my disabled brother as well. It was the
first home mom had ever owned. She loved it here so very much. She had
what she had always wanted, a home where all the people she loved could
be together. We moved here in February 2010, and mom paseed away
happily in her sleep on June 20, 2010.

|
When we started the repair
and clean up of the property it was almost over whelming. My husband
Randy and I put in over a month of time doing what needed to be done
just to make it possible for the mortgage company to approve it for
loan. 7 days a week and sometimes 12 hours a day for both of us. Thank
God Randy is a master carpenter. The formal dinning room ceiling was
caving in. the Garage celing was caved in. The cedar shingle roof was
about 60 years old and had failed completely. There was water running
down the foyer walls up starirs when it rained, remember we live in
Oregon, so it was quite often. The downstairs bath at one point of
remodel was so bad you could see the sky. Randy practically single
handed ripped out all bad wood and studs, completely repairing all
previous damage to the structure. Anew roof went on. Carpet was
replaced through out the whole house. there was about $30,000 put into
repairs. Randy rebuilt the stair case, taking care not to disturb
Patty's red tile. The red oak wood that now covers each stair and the
foyer complimenting Pattys taste. We left the chrystal chandeliers and
painted the home trough out, removed a jungle of brush from the
sloaping yard, put in new carpet, and new bathroom fixtures bringing it
up to date.
The home was valued almost $100,000 over what we paid for it once all
the repairs were done. It is the show piece that it once was. We still
have a few projects that have to be done, but I love this place, and I
hope God willing that we never have to leave.
|
| Tell
us about your memories of the house? |
|
We have only been in the
home a year now, but the memories that have been created here I will
cherrish forever. In this short ammount of time I Lost my Mother, was
reunited with my children, and was able to have a home that could
accomidate my disabled brother Steven so we could finnally bring him
home from the nursing home.
Christmas was my moms favorite time of year, and in her memory this
past Christmas I decked this house out in all her old ornaments and
christmas garb. It was absolutly beautiful and I know she would have
been thrilled.
I have come to realize that a house is just a house, it is the memories
of those who live in it and those who used to live init that give it
its history and make it a home. It is the love of the people that
reside inside, and this house is home.
Thank you for giving me this opprotunity,
Vickie Anderson
