Added bathroom
upstairs. Built out over small room (Study)
downstairs in 2005 (which was a nightmare of a
project and a lousy contractor that I had had it
with by the end and had to fire). Added patio and
back door entering & exiting from dining room in
2006.
When I bought it, the house had two bedrooms
upstairs, and a living room, dining room, small room
off of dining room (which I used as my den and later
converted to my study), kitchen, and bathroom
downstairs. I believe the kitchen and bathroom was
added on sometime in the 1920's and door entering
the kitchen from the dining room was originally the
door to the back yard. The kitchen was either
separate from the house, or was in what is now the
dining room. The bathroom was an outhouse in the far
part of the back yard. The entire house was heated
by a stove in the living room and probably a cooking
stove in the dining room (which was probably the
kitchen) as I uncovered a patched up hole in the
chimney when I took the wall paper down. Eventually
the entire house was converted to gas, and then
electricity for lighting, and oil for heat.

I bought this house in
March of 2000. It is my first house I ever bought.
The street was originally named School St. No. 1
(and the other two streets were No. 2 & No. 3). All
land on these three streets were willed to the town
of Bristol by Nathaniel Byfield. No land was able to
be purchased and all residents on these streets were
able to own their buildings, but the land was rented
from the town. The money generated from the rent was
given to all the schools in the town (hence the 3
street names). The street names were eventally
changed to First School St., (Second & Third School
St. respectively), shortened to First, Second,
Third, and then changed back. In 1960 the Will was
broken and residents were able to buy their land.
I have had fun restoring the place (though it has
been sometimes costly), and enjoy the original
character it has along with the period detail. My
contractor friend doing the finish work on the
bathroom project found a nickel from 1869 that was
placed under the floor boards when pulling a few of
them up which he was kind enough to give me. I have
some good memories here, but unfortunatly have not
been married yet (hoping this will change) so no
family memories other than my birth family visiting
and occasional get togethers also some fun 4th of
July parties in the back yard, and friend get
togethers. The patio makes the back yard even more
enjoyable. |
