Took out rugs
redid the hard wood floors took out a
sister wall in the basement redid the floor in the kitchen, painted dry
wall the basement put in a toilet in the basement, cemented the out

renovate the interior of the home.
Unforunately, when we purchased the home, a lot of cheap rennovation
had been made, so we tried to keep what we could that was unique to the
home. Removed three trees in the back, and 1 in the front.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, having received a bronze star for heroic action. Reached the rank of Captain in the Army. He was given the title of Colonel as Military Adviser to Gov. Edgar. He was also Republican County Chairman of Marion County, Illinois for several terms. |

| Memory | The Thanksgiving Holiday is always a favorite memory in this house. Playing Croquet in the back lawn when I was a child, when my grandparents were living, is a very fond memory. |
| Other Information | This house was built in 1842 and is known as the Lemen-Frakes House. It was built for Rev. Benjamin F. and Mary Putnam (Rand) Lemen. The Lemen's were a very prominent family in Salem and southern Illinois. Rev. Lemen was a Baptist minister. Mrs. Lemen was an eduator. Their daughter, Lydia, married Count John Sobieski, Prince Royal and heir to the throne of Poland. Abraham Lincoln stayed in the house on 9 June 1849. My great-grandparents, Julius and Anna (Maier) Merten moved into the house in 1909, purchasing it in 1914. My grandparents, William Philip and Beatrice M. J. (Merten) Frakes purchased the house in 1941. My parents, Philip Howard and Monna Marilyn (Conant) Frakes, purchased the house in 1981. We still own the house in 2007. |

Cut down two
trees in the backyard.
Two large bushes at the start of the sidewalk to the front door were cut down. A two small gardens was planted. The upstairs bathroom was demolished. Wallpaper was taken down in the bedroom on the right, if you were to walk up the stairs. |

All of my
memories as a young child were in this
house. I was only 2 years old when I move here, and left when I was 9.
There is honestly too much to type down, and most of it is hard to
explain. Many simple, but important memories.
