How to Do Garage Door Repairs

A crucial consideration when building your garage is that it’s an integral part of the house and at some point you’ll encounter repairs. It’s important for it to complement the design and color scheme of the house. It should be carefully designed and built since they make up most of the structure. The first thing that companies do is to decide on the size of, then the type of  panels to use for easy repairs.

Garage Door Repairs – Choosing the Right Styles for Panels

These come in various design styles and sizes. The style that you choose and buy will be constructed based on the size and total appearance. There are four common designs for your panels.

  • Flush panels have even planes and are slightly textured. The style is very simple and is designed to blend in with the garage’s façade.

  • Short raised panels are designed to create depth and interest to the door’s face. This type of style is great for Tudor or Victorian style homes with their elaborate architectural details and can be a bit complicated to detach during repairs.

  • Long raised panels bring an element of depth and movement in the entire surface. The design adds power and substance to the entire frontage.

  • Contemporary garage doors’ painted panels give that added punch to raised ones. This style looks really great on doors with contrasting shades.

After some time,  repairs will be inevitable once wear and tear changes the shape of the panels. When this occurs, you can try to look for new ones for sale and hire a professional to install it or you can try to fix it by yourself.

Garage Door Repairs – Fix Garage Door on Your Own

Typically, the panel repair is quite easy, which is why numerous homeowners prefer to do it themselves. All you need are a ratchet, screwdriver, socket and the replacement one. However, finding the exact replacements for your home can be challenging. If you have the extra money, it might be more convenient to have the entire one replaced. But if you’re working with a budget, you have to find that perfect one. Follow these steps for hassle free repairs.

  • Look for the right panels once a  repair is needed. Check with the manufacturer where you bought it or other companies. Each of them is uniquely made, so an exact replacement can be found with the manufacturers. Check it for a seal that contains the manufacturer’s information.

  • Be sure to get the panel’s measurement accurately. Nothing is more frustrating than ordering a one for replacement and finding that it doesn’t fit it, thereby delaying the  repairs. To avoid the inconvenience of delays and having to return it, check the length and the width of the measurements you’ve taken against the size of the other panels. Only after you’ve checked several times should you place your orders for replacement panels.

  • To expedite repairs, provide the manufacturer with as much detailed information as you can, including photographs of the exact one that needs to be changed. Giving the name or model number is usually enough for most manufacturers, but giving more information will definitely help.

  • Start your garage door repairs and remove the panels. If you have an automatic one, make sure you unplug all garage openers. After that, manually open the door and carefully remove the springs. Slide off each panel until you reach the one that should be replaced. However, you need to know the door’s mechanism to avoid further damage. This is why you might need a ratchet and socket during repairs.

  • Re-attach the old panels once the new one is in place. Once all the panels are back on the frame, check the panels,  hinges, bolts, struts and rollers of the garage door and make sure they’re fastened tightly and securely.

  • The newly replaced panels might have a different shade from the others, so some homeowners repaint it as well during repairs.
